BA Grades 4-8 English Language Arts and Reading Certification/MED in Reading and English as a Second Language

The Bachelor of Arts English Language Arts and Reading Grades 4-8 with Teacher Certification and the Master of Education in Reading and English as a Second Language program (BA 4-8/MEDRE) is a 159-hour program. Graduates from the program will receive both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Education in Reading and English as a Second Language. This non-thesis program is designed for those seeking initial teacher certification and enhanced expertise in the area of teaching English language arts, reading, and English as a second language. Once candidates have completed their initial teaching certification and required coursework in this degree, and if they have passed the appropriate state certification (TExES) tests, candidates will receive their 4-8 Grades English Language Arts Certification and English as a Second Language Endorsement/Certification. After teachers graduating from this program have completed two years of teaching experience, and if they have passed the appropriate state certification (TExES) tests, they will also earn the Reading Specialist Certification and the Master Reading Teacher Certification.

A 120-credit-hour minimum for a bachelor's degree is required. Students must complete all Undergraduate hours and shared undergraduate/graduate hours prior to enrolling for remaining Graduate hours.

Elective Requirements*

• In order to satisfy the “Undergraduate only” portion of an accelerated degree plan, sufficient lower-level and upper-level elective hours must be taken to complete the minimum number of Undergraduate credit hours required for each specific accelerated degree.

• As part of this accelerated degree plan, 12 shared Graduate hours will be counted toward a minimum of 42 upper-level Undergraduate semester hours required for all bachelor’s degrees.

Students will complete state requirements for initial teacher certification in the areas 4-8 English Language Arts. Students completing this program will learn and demonstrate how to serve as an effective literacy teacher and leader through synthesis and application of knowledge regarding the interrelated components of reading, writing, speaking, and listening across developmental stages of oral and written language. Degree candidates will also learn and demonstrate sufficient theoretical and experiential knowledge for serving as an ethical and effective teacher, advocate, and leader for culturally and linguistically diverse students.

Students completing this Accelerated Bachelor’s and Master’s degree program will take the following courses at the graduate level as substitutes for their undergraduate cross-listed course requirements, thereby requiring 24 hours instead of the regular 36 graduate hours for the program beyond the regular undergraduate degree requirements.

Retention in and Graduation from the Program:

Students must fulfill the following conditions to enroll and continue enrollment in this Accelerated Bachelor’s and Master’s degree program:

  • Students must be accepted to the Educator Preparation Program at the completion of 45 semester hours.

  • Students must file a Statement of Commitment at the completion of 90 semester hours (including current enrollment).

  • Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in all educator preparation coursework.

  • Students must apply to and be accepted into the MED in Reading and ESL program before the start of the Junior spring semester (before 5000 level courses) in order to progress in graduate coursework and complete the MED in Reading and ESL degree.

  • Science and Math courses must be taken prior to Field-Based semesters.
